Map and gym data

Gym locations, towns and the suggested gyms in RateClimbs come from open map data. This is where each piece comes from and the licence it is under.

OpenStreetMap

Map tiles, gym locations matched on the map, towns looked up with Nominatim, places found when searching by address, and the “More suggestions from OpenStreetMap” list are © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.

The gym suggestions we build from OpenStreetMap are open data under the ODbL, as a CSV you can download.

Overture Maps

The “Suggested gyms” lists, and the location and town of a gym added from one of them, come from the Overture Maps Foundation, with data from Meta, Microsoft, Foursquare and others, under the Community Data License Agreement – Permissive – Version 2.0 and, for Foursquare data, the Apache License 2.0 (Foursquare NOTICE). Foursquare data was transformed to the Overture schema. See Overture’s attribution page.

Suggestions are provided as is and are not checked until a climber adds the gym.

Google Maps

Places found through the Google search on the find screen, and the location of a gym added from one, use Google Maps features and content. They carry the Google Maps credit where they show. Their use is subject to the Google Maps Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy.
